Fast Forward

Old farmhouse table
shows scribbles of
purple marker
dulled with time and
occasional scrubbing
and the kids grow
up.

Who knew it would
be such a lightning flash?

In the time since
The Green World
was released, a
child has become
a young woman.

Glossy promotional
materials from
small midwestern
liberal arts colleges
strewn across
farmhouse table
hide all purple
streaks.

Stand at the road
divided;
choose a route;
see a new path;
adjust the lens;
leave behind what
is known.

It is time.
This house
can no longer hold
the weight of her
dreams.
